Open Water Diver
Take the plunge - become an independent diver with the SSI Open Water Diver programme
The SSI Open Water Diver course
Your first dive certification. After the OWD you dive independently, worldwide, to 18 metres.
The SSI Open Water Diver course (OWD) is the starting point for all your diving adventures. After earning this internationally recognised certification, you can dive independently (always with a buddy) to 18 metres depth — anywhere in the world.
The course consists of three parts. You study the theory at your own pace via the SSI app or website, at home or on the go. Then comes a pool day: we practise all the basic skills in a controlled environment. After that, you complete four open water dives in the Grevelingenmeer.
We always work in small groups: maximum two students per instructor in open water. That means more personal attention, better learning and more enjoyment.

The standard OWD programme is a solid foundation for most students. But there is more to get out of it. Here are a few ways to enrich the course or hit the ground running afterwards.
OWD Plus — more dives, more experience
Your OWD certification is awarded after four open water dives. But the more you dive, the more comfortable and confident you become. The OWD Plus package adds two extra open water dives to the standard programme. Ideal if you want more time to practise, extra focus on specific skills, or simply want to enjoy more time diving in the Grevelingenmeer.
Ask about OWD PlusNitrox
Nitrox (Enriched Air) contains more oxygen than regular air, allowing for longer dives and less nitrogen build-up. The Nitrox specialty pairs perfectly with the OWD course and can be completed directly after — or even during — the course. Ideal for divers who want to make multiple dives per day.
More about NitroxPerfect Buoyancy
Good buoyancy control is the foundation of diving. The Perfect Buoyancy specialty teaches you to fine-tune your trim, posture and breathing so you move through the water effortlessly and efficiently. Highly recommended straight after your OWD, while the core skills are still fresh.
More about Perfect BuoyancyUnderwater Navigation
Knowing where you are and how to get back is an essential diving skill. The Navigation specialty teaches you to use a compass, recognise landmarks and explore a dive site systematically. It builds your independence and confidence underwater.

How deep can I dive after obtaining my OWD certification?
After obtaining your SSI Open Water Diver certification, you may dive independently (always with a buddy) to a maximum depth of 18 metres, worldwide. The certification is recognised by all major diving organisations.
What are the requirements for the Open Water Diver course?
You must be at least 14 years old (up to 15, the Junior OWD programme applies; up to 18, a parent's permission is required), be able to swim and there should be no medical objections to participating in scuba diving activities. You will bring your own swimming gear.
How many students are there per instructor on the Open Water Diver course?
At Dive School de Grevelingen, there is a maximum of two students per instructor in the open water. This way, each student gets personal attention and can learn at their own pace. In the pool, we take a maximum of five students at a time.
Do I need to buy my own diving equipment for the course?
No. Use of full diving equipment, including a dive computer, is included in the course. You only bring your own swimming gear. We do recommend buying your own equipment: it increases your comfort and safety underwater. And, it is also much more hygienic.
Can I combine the Open Water Diver course with a specialty?
Yes. You can combine the OWD course with specialties such as Nitrox, Perfect Trimming or Computer Diving. This is an efficient way to learn more immediately and get two certifications at the same time. This way, you will complete the course with extra experience and knowledge and you're off with a flying start with your diving career. Check out our price list for the packages we offer.
Where do the outdoor dives of the Open Water Diver course take place?
The four outdoor dives take place in Lake Grevelingen, at dive site Kerkweg in Den Osse. This is a calm saltwater lake with no tidal current, ideal for novice divers. Our regular dive site is thereby ideal for beginners, you can make several dives a day and the facilities are excellent. Besides toilets, a changing room, (cold) outdoor shower, diving platform and a filling station, there is also a cafeteria that is open every day during the season.
